What If? A New beginning...

If I ever had Donald Trump or Bill Gates type money, one of the very first things I would do is buy a professional sports franchise. With the program Baseball Mogul 2007, it effectively lets a user simulate a baseball franchise from behind the scenes.

Two things constantly seem to stand in the way of the Devil Rays being a winning team. 1) Payroll. This is easily fixed in the game with the feature of comissioner mode. I have increased the Devil Rays payroll to BEYOND that of the New York Yankees to 400 Million. A Donald Trump/Bill Gates type persona would probably do the same thing, commit to win. Or think to real life examples a la Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks. No, he did not have his team win the NBA Championship but his team DID make it to the finals. Which goes to show, if you do it right, you get the right results.

Another example is my hometown team the Buccaneers. Culverhouse, cheap owner, cheap reaults. The Glazers, go for it all and get it all in return (though Tony Dungy was ousted in a less then classy way but that is another subject for another time). You spend money, eg payroll, you get quality. Much like the majority of modern corperate America, The Devil Rays think that they can get get more done with less.

2) The AL EAST. Not exactly a great division for a young Team. It is brutal having the Red Sox and Yankees in the same division year in and year out. Thanks again to the magic of the commissoner mode, I am realigning the Devil Rays to the American League WEST and shifting Seattle to take the place of the Devil Rays in the AL EAST.

With those two huge speedbumps out of the way the last thing to do is sign some freaking starting pitchers to boost Kazmir and Shields that DON'T SUCK. Done, thanks to the wonderful payroll feature.

With all that prolouge out of the way, let's take the afternoon off, get out the hot dogs and mustard, but the 8 dollar beers (or 5 dollar sodas), add on the fries and sit down to a simulated year of Devil Rays baseball on my fictional Radio Station.

Just to wet your anticipation some one of the pitchers that the simulated DRays have signed is Roger Clemens.

Thanks to Baseball Mogul 2007 and Dynastymanager.com for bringing this all together in my mind : - )

MLB News...New Owner In Tampa

October 6, 2005 ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have a new owner as Joel Verlin assumed control from Vince Namoli this morning.
The press conference was quick and to the point as Joel layed out his desire to transform the Devil Rays into a winning franchise.
"Miracles have alrady happened with professional football and professional hockey here in Tampa Bay; why not with professional baseball as well?"

When asked about weither or not the payroll will be increased, Joel replied, "That is the number one priority...I am looking to get a massive payroll boost to this ball club, I want to win at any cost. we must not be like the majority of corperate America in thinking that you can get more with less. Regardless of any other changes that we will make, the bottom line is that everyone involved wants to see a whole lot more wins in the W column. Right here, right now, this will END the Devil Rays being the laughing stock of Major League Baseball.

Joel laid out a lot of changes, such as being more fan friendly at "the Trop"; transfering some of the radio broadcasts to 620 WDAE; and improving pitching and the Devil Rays run output.
Everyone left the conference feeling more upeat then every about Devil Rays Baseball then ever before.

Rays Realinged To AL West
Devil Rays And Mariners to be realigned... Today in Tampa at Feathersound Country Club, Devil Rays owner Joel Verlin announced that the Devil Rays are being realinged from the AL East to the AL West and that the Seattle Mariners are taking the place of the Devil Rays in the AL East. Devil Rays management expects to field calls and e-mails from angry Boston and New York fans becuase of interleague play, this will reduce the number of times the Red Sox and Yankees will be coming to Tampa. "I want a TAMPA team that wins, not a baseball field that has Red Sox or Yankees fans dominating the seats. I am not here to cater to anyone. I am here to bring a winning baseball team to Tampa." Joel also finally revealed how the Devil Rays were able to sign all of those offseason free agents including "The Rocket" Roger Clemens. "We're talking even bigger payroll then the Red Sox OR the Yankees and let's just leave it at that for now, shall we?" Joel responded when hounded for specifics. "When I said last year that I want to bring winning ball to Tampa Bay ; I meant it. It looks to be an interesting year in Tampa Bay Baseball! .... ...
